Timber Country Dies In Japan

International sire Timber Country, a Preakness Stakes winner who shuttled to Australia, has died n Japan.

The 24 year-old Woodman stallion died at Lex Stud at the age of 24.

He was Champion USA 2YO in 1994 and returned the following year to finish third to Thunder Gulch in the Kentucky Derby.

He reversed the Derby result in the Preakness Stakes but he missed the Belmont Stakes due to a virus. He never raced again after suffering a tendon injury and was sold to Japan’s Shadai Farm for $US12 million.

Timber Country’s noted progeny included Japanese champion Admire Don and Australian G1 champion Eremein, who counted the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, BMW, Ranvet Stakes, Australian Derby and Rosehill Guineas among his wins.

His other Australian stakes winners included Lord Of The Land, Sam Sung A Song and Timbourina.

Timber Country’s dam was the US Broodmare of the Year Fall Aspen, also the dam of Bianconi, Fort Wood, Hamas, Northern Aspen, Elle Seule and Colorado Dancer, the mother of Dubai Millennium.

Timber Country shuttled from Japan to Arrowfield Stud in the late 1990s.

He also stood in Dubai before returning to Australia for one season at Eliza Park Stud in 2006.
