Long Leaf wins 2017 Merson Cooper Stakes Listed $120,000 at Sandown-Hillside (VIC), 1000m.

A winner in Adelaide on debut, Long Leaf made it two from two with a tenacious win here. He jumped well from the outside barrier (8) to be camped a half length off the pace when they settled.

Still second at the 600m, he then ran up to challenge the leader at the 400m but rider Kerrin McEvoy didn't get busy until the 200m which saw the colt lift and go for the line, fighting hard and refusing to be beaten to hold on well by a head.

A nice effort from Oohood who was last turning in, pulled widest and put in a strong run all the way only to come up a head short from Sanglier, who led early, coled turning in but could not go with the first two late to be a couple of lengths back in third. The first three were clear of the rest.
